The Mural

Our wall facing onto Riebeek West’s main road is a prominent extension of the gallery, visible to all who pass by.

The Wall at Blacksmith Yard: Danielle Vorster

I have been working with grids for a while. What draws me to them is the assumption they make: that whatever lies beneath will stay still.

In this mural, it doesn’t. The colour fields push up against the structure from below, and the grid bends. It warps, it stretches, it loses its rigidity. The thing doing the distorting and the thing being distorted are one and the same. That tension is what the work is about.

The colours and shapes beneath the grid are not arbitrary. There is something in them that might seem familiar: the way this landscape looks when you get above it. Not a map exactly, but not not a map either.

Sited on the exterior wall of the Blacksmith Yard in Riebeek West, this is the first in a rotating series: a wall that changes with each artist invited to respond to it.

Danielle Vorster is a South African artist based in Riebeek West, working primarily in mixed media, printmaking, and textiles.
